1 August – Swiss National Day With Migros

Beatrice Lessi

Switzerland’s Birthday: 1 August

The 1 August is the date of an alliance formed in 1291 by the three cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden, the centre around which Switzerland was built. A Letter of Alliance (in German: Bundesbrief) was signed. This is now considered the act of foundation of the country.

Today, the 1 August is celebrated as the Swiss National day.

How To Celebrate

Swiss people are very proud of their country and celebrate the day together. If you are in Switzerland the 1 August, you can’t miss the patriotic atmosphere, the decorations and…the good food!

Celebrations include a speech by the President of the Swiss Confederation, solemn words by public figures from political or cultural life, singing the national anthem, street concerts with Alphorns or drums, and a rare Open Day at the Bundeshaus (Parliament building).

Fireworks and bonfires, usually on a hill or elevated spots, commemorates the expulsion of foreign bailiffs in the fourteenth century, the news of which were spread in this manner in those days. And Swiss people love fireworks! There are official fireworks in many Swiss landmarks (the most famous one is known as “fire on the rocks”, at the Rhine falls in Stein am Rhein), but also private ones everywhere: even kids buy some small ones for the occasion.

And there’s more: buildings are decorated with lights and flags, bakers make special bread rolls with a paper Swiss flag on top. Everything is red and white the 1 August.

1 August With Migros

We love celebrating in style and preparing decorations in red and white too. Migros offers a beautiful selection of food and 1 August decorations for any price, so we always prepare a stylish and traditional setting for the outdoor, to eat with our friends, and wait for the firework in good company.

Come Si Festeggia

I piu’ famosi?
