Ultramarathon runner tests the Swiss sleep innovation

Beatrice Lessi

Interview  by Blick.

As an ultramarathon runner, Beatrice Lessi knows how important good sleep is before and after peak athletic performance—but also in everyday life. Can pajamas help? She tried it out for us.

Sleep is incredibly important for a fulfilling lifestyle. Only when I truly rest at night am I ready to give my all during the day and fully recover after a strenuous day or sporting activity. But that’s not all. Sleep is also my most important beauty and health secret. So, in short: Without restful nights, I can’t manage my runs or my everyday life.

I find it especially difficult to get the most out of my sleep in the fall. In this transitional season, you never know what the temperature will be like at night or during the day. You heat up the apartment, but then an unexpectedly mild night arrives, and I wake up drenched in sweat. But if I opt for light, airy pajamas, I’m too cold and wake up shivering. The result is that I’m tired the next day and have less energy than usual. This rarely happens for me, and only when I’ve had a bad night’s sleep.

Not all pajamas are created equal – as the Swiss sleepwear brand Dagsmejan proves. The company has set itself the goal of revolutionizing the clothes we wear at night and, with scientific support , improving them so that we can get the most out of our sleep every night . Here’s how it works:

Dagsmejan’s Balance collection was developed in collaboration with Swiss research institutes such as Empa and HSLU and independently tested for its effectiveness. It is made from natural beech fibers refined with Dagsmejan’s proprietary Nattwell technology . This has been scientifically proven to make these pajamas six times more breathable and four times faster drying than conventional cotton pajamas.

That’s why it’s the only pajama for me

Some athletes love their gadgets. Others have a laser focus on their performance. I’ve discovered what really matters: good sleep, and therefore the sleepwear that enables it. This is my secret weapon and a topic that many other athletes tend to neglect.

In addition, I’m slowly but surely approaching sixty. With that comes the fact that my body tends to go haywire when it comes to hormone and temperature regulation. This is another area where Balance pajamas offer me a huge advantage. Because I never have to worry about which sleepwear to wear at which stage of life. The answer is always: balance!

In fact, I’ve tried my Balance pajamas in many different places: at home, in hotel rooms, in mountain huts, and many more. No matter how my surroundings changed, one thing remained constant: the luxuriously soft pajamas kept me in the right temperature Zone, always and everywhere, allowing me to sleep peacefully and deeply. So, when I pack for a trip, Balance is the first thing that goes into my suitcase.

More tips for good sleep

Of course, good pajamas help immensely when it comes to sleeping better. But to get a truly deep and restful night’s sleep, you need a little more. I’ve found my routine now and would like to share a few of my tips with you so you can give yourself the best chance of a good night’s sleep, too!

  • An old alarm clock: It may sound strange, but it actually works for me. Buy an old, inexpensive alarm clock and put it on your nightstand. This way, you can banish your phone from the bedroom and avoid the risk of getting stuck in a doomscrolling spiral before bed.
  • Fresh air and natural light: The first thing I do in the morning is open my windows and let in the fresh air and sunshine—for at least twenty minutes. This helps me wake up faster, my body knows it’s time to get going, and my skin absorbs all those good vitamin D rays! This works even when it’s cloudy.
  • No screens before bed: The content on my smartphone—be it news, social media, emails, or WhatsApp messages—is agitating. And that’s precisely why I ban screens from my bedroom so I can be calm and relaxed before bed.
  • Don’t think: Whenever I find myself in a negative thought spiral, I imagine I’m a Navy Seal trained to fall asleep instantly, anytime, anywhere. One of their techniques works particularly well for me. I repeat to myself, “Don’t think!” over and over for about ten seconds. That’s usually enough.
  • Cool room: The ideal temperature for the bedroom is around 18°C. Therefore, I make sure my bedroom is always a little cooler than the rest of the house.
  • Light dinner: You’ve noticed it yourself. If you eat a fatty, rich, and filling dinner, you sleep worse. This is because your body is still busy digesting when it should be relaxing and sleeping. So eat lightly in the evening, but also make sure you don’t go to bed hungry. Personally, I never skip dinner. Extremes are never good.
  • Good aromas: Last but not least, you can use calming scents like jasmine or lavender to gently guide you to sleep.
