BREAKING: Penguins Live in the Antarctica, Polar Bears roam in the Arctic

Beatrice Lessi

Breaking news: penguins live in Antarctica, in the far south. Polar bears roam the Arctic, in the far north. It sounds obvious — but more people than you’d think mix the two up. I might have too, had I not had the privilege of experiencing both firsthand: running the Antarctica Marathon, and then travelling to Svalbard.
Here’s what actually separates these two frozen worlds:

🐧 The animals don’t overlap. Penguins have never seen a polar bear — and honestly, lucky them.

🌍 One is a continent, one is an ocean. Antarctica is a landmass the size of the US and Mexico combined, surrounded by sea. The Arctic is an ocean surrounded by land.

🥶 Antarctica is far colder. On average about 20°C colder than the Arctic — because it sits on rock and ice high above sea level, with no ocean underneath to soften the blow.

🏔️ Antarctica has no permanent residents. No countries, no towns — just scientists and penguins. The Arctic has Indigenous communities, reindeer, wolves, and eight nations with territorial claims.

🏜️ Both are technically deserts. Less than 200mm of precipitation per year. Ice everywhere, but almost no rain or snow falling.
Two poles. Two completely different planets.
