Running with Swiss Champions

Beatrice Lessi

Laureus did it again!

How can you convince gold medalists, Swiss champions, and highly competitive athletes to run very slowly in the city of Zurich, together with people who can hardly follow them, for no competition, compensation or immediate advantage? Laureus did it. It made them part of a common mission. And a very important one  too.

The event took place two weeks ago, and was organised by Laureus Switzerland.

The Laureus Foundation Switzerland is one of eight national foundations worldwide of the global Sport For Good Foundation. Every year, more than 23,000 children and young people in Switzerland are supported in social sports programs. Athletes join these children and actively take part in the programs, and you can imagine the enthusiasm and motivation they spark in them. And they sparked enthusiasm in me too!

I was invited the morning of the Laureus Charity Night  I loved the cool atmosphere. All guests were slightly nervous, fearing the champions, but also in awe. Martin Wittwer, the Laureus CEO, gave a short speech and immediately made us all feel at home.

We then set off: Daniela Ryf, Nicola Spierig, Jan Van Berkel, Sarah Van Berkel, Mario Gyr, Carlos Lima and On Running, the main sponsor. Jan was directing the traffic, Nicola and Daniela were almost always in the front, or graciously let other runners pass them for a moment, and take photos. It was a beautiful relaxed morning, and a way to talk and have fun with everybody: running is the best tool for networking, and makes everybody equal. Well…apart from the champions, who remain champions!

Yes, sport does have the power to change a mood, a life, and the future too. Thank you Laureus Switzerland once more.
